Hellboy in the Shadows
Here's something you don't see every day: A Silver Age Master drawing a modern icon who's headlined two recent hit movies! This is my third opportunity to ink Gene Colan's pencils, and nothing is more artistically fulfilling! I would've loved to work with Gene on a monthly comic, but I was born a bit too late. A little drybrush, a little rapidograph lines and some sculpting with whiteout! I strongly recommend the Twomorrows book Secrets in the Shadows: The Art & Life of Gene Colan!

Run, Matt Murdock!
Great pose, mid-costume change. I like the longer hair here, as it reminds me of how Matt was rendered during the all-too-brief Gil Kane/Klaus Janson period (#147-151). This was surprisingly quick and easy to bang this one out. Must've been a good day for me. I used brush on the clothing folds with some quill touch-up. A little drybrush on the fading shadow, and it's done!

Doom in Regal Repose
Friend and big-time Doc Doom fan Gary Sella finds the most inspired commissions from off-the-radar artists. Who else would get the man who inked Super-Villain Team-up, Doom's 1970's team-up title to do a commish thirty years later? Don became a hot artist on Valiant's Bloodshot, and the man's still got it! If you check out the pencil version, you'll see that he put all that detail in: I was just following the man's lead!

Nexus
This was a cover prelim, as you can see on The Dude's notes, for Diamond Distributors' solicitations. On Nexus' shoulder lightning-bolt detail, I added a metallic sheen, similar to the early Nexus logo from the Capital & First comics era. The halftones were done with a 90% warm gray Prismacolor pencil. This is one series I have the complete run and I suggest you pick up the Hardcover reprints or scour back issue bins at conventions. BTW, note the slight changes in the final printed version.

Marvel Superheroes
This was quite the time-consuming piece. I wrestled with a variety of styles and textures in my attempt to translate the amazing nuances of the pencilled version. I folded some thin rapidograph lines in with drybrush as well as the 90% gray Prismacolor pencil. For Iron man, I went for hard contrast and orderly-tapered fades using both a quill and rapidograph. Finally, I embellished with Pro White to make Both Cap's chain mail and Spidey's webbing pop. Fun and maddening at the same time!

The Demon
This was originally intended as a pin-up for Action Comics over 20 years ago! It went unused until now, thanks to Gary Sella, who purchased it and asked me to ink it. This piece was very John Byrne-ish to my eye, so I gave it a tech pen treatment, with a little splats tossed at the top left. I added some black to the top of The Demon's left leg to tie it in with the lava light source.

Galactus-ka
Here's a conundrum: Assign George Tuska to replicate a classic John Byrne cover from Fantastic Four #243. But instead of adding his own style, he lightboxes it to closer resemble the original. The details are suggested, but not completed. The only way to tighten it was to ink the details as Byrne did. So what you get is a darn good copy, but no Tuska punch.
